Substrate Preparation Guide for Applying SPEEDLINER PRO® Polymer Coatings

General Preparation Rules (All Substrates)

  • Surfaces must be clean, dry, and structurally sound
  • Remove all grease, oil, wax, dirt, loose coatings, and biological contamination
  • Use Wipe Down Blend for surface cleaning unless stated otherwise
  • Recommended abrasion level: 60 – 80 grit production paper or equivalent scuffing
  • Observe all primer flash/cure times precisely before coating
  • Apply coatings in suitable environmental conditions using correct PPE

Wood & Timber Surfaces

  • Ensure surface is fully dry and moisture content is stable
  • Clean using Wipe Down Blend
  • Do not sand or abrade
  • Apply Primer AP101 by spray, brush, or roller
  • Allow 30 minutes flash dry time
  • Apply SPEEDLINER PRO® coating at recommended thickness

Phenolic Ply / Trailer Board

  • Abrade using a D/A sander + 60 – 80 grit paper
  • Break through the gloss layer of the phenolic surface
  • Give particular attention to edges and perimeter zones
  • Clean using Wipe Down Blend™
  • Apply Primer AP101
  • Allow 30 minutes flash dry time
  • Apply SPEEDLINER PRO® coating

Painted Metal (Transport & Fleet Vehicles)

  • Scuff surface using 60 – 80 grit paper or nylon cup brush
  • Do not remove paint layer – roughen only to remove glaze
  • Clean using Wipe Down Blend™
  • Apply a light mist coat of Primer AP101
  • Allow 30 minutes flash dry time
  • Apply SPEEDLINER PRO® coating

Concrete & Cementitious Substrates

  • Ensure surface is free of dust and moisture
  • Clean using Wipe Down Blend
  • Apply a wet coat of Primer AP101
  • Allow 30 minutes flash dry time
  • If primer absorbs rapidly into fresh concrete, apply a second coat
  • Apply SPEEDLINER PRO® coating

Bare Metal & Galvanized Steel

  • Abrade using D/A sander + 60 – 80 grit paper
  • Clean using Wipe Down Blend
  • Apply Metal Etch Primer
  • Allow 2 – 4 hours cure time
  • Apply a light coat of Primer AP101
  • Allow 30 minutes flash dry time
  • Apply SPEEDLINER PRO® coating

Stainless Steel & Aluminium

  • Abrade using D/A sander + 60 – 80 grit paper
  • Clean using Wipe Down Blend
  • Apply Metal Etch Primer
  • Allow 2 – 4 hours cure time
  • Apply a light coat of Primer AP101
  • Allow 30 minutes flash dry time
  • Apply SPEEDLINER PRO® coating

Existing Urethane / Other Spray Liner Coatings

  • Scuff lightly using 80 grit paper or nylon cup brush
  • Clean using Wipe Down Blend
  • Apply a light coat of Primer AP101™
  • Allow 30 minutes flash dry time
  • Re-coat using SPEEDLINER PRO®

GRP / Fibreglass / GRP, ABS & A.B.S. Plastics

  • Abrade using D/A sander + 60 – 80 grit paper
  • Remove all surface glaze and roughen uniformly
  • Clean using Wipe Down Blend
  • Apply a light coat of Primer AP101
  • Allow 30 minutes flash dry time
  • Apply SPEEDLINER PRO® coating

Poly-Ethylene & Non-Standard Plastics

Specialist primers and process validation are required.

Consult SPEEDLINER PRO® Technical Support before application. Compatibility must be verified.

Safety & Buyer Awareness

  • Coating performance and warranty durability are directly tied to correct surface preparation
  • Be cautious of solvent-heavy, low-cost spray liners that cure with minimal solids
  • Always reference sprayed sample test data when reviewing tensile/tear strength
  • Fast-cure plural systems require climate-controlled environments and professional calibration
  • Use coatings only in appropriate facilities with suitable respiratory PPE

SPEEDLINER PRO® substrate preparation must be followed precisely to achieve maximum adhesion, colour stability, hygiene performance and long-term durability.
